Sugar High

September 16, 2012

It never ceases to amaze me that no matter where we go, the conversation can turn to football. Yet in that same moment because of the special bond we share due to the ups and downs of football, we can continually joke and laugh about anything.

The evening was spent with friends that we always have amazing times with. Friends that have come into our lives specifically because of football. I laughed so hard tonight that I physically ache from it.

Occasionally i do find myself rolling my eyes or excusing myself from conversations because of the nonstop football talk. I don’t care that the offense needs to be tweaked or that a particular coach needs to re-schooled in the play book. I do understand the importance of those conversations, but Lordy, how can the same group of people have those same conversations over and over again?!

With that said, tonight, football turned into ball busting that turned into off color jokes and hysterical inappropriateness.

Our football family has changed over the years. People come and go. Some family members have become distant cousins that we see for fleeting moments that we cherish. Some people have been reduced to blips on Facebook pages. Others gone and never mentioned. We have a close intimate circle this year, despite having many coaches, only a few of us spend the wee hours after the game downing beers and cursing the refs.

Those are the moments that make football sacrifices worth it. I can forgive the late nights, missed dinners and half-assed done chores for the smiles and loving giggles shared amongst others who understand what it’s like to be in our situation. I can get over the fact that we haven’t been on vacation together for a year because we spent time with people that we love and adore.

Every year I look at the start of football season with a slight feeling of dread, an anxious heart, and a stomach of excited butterflies. And despite the resentment I have towards football sometimes, I am already disappointed that next week is week #4 of this season. It almost half over. How can that be? CC has been planning these 10 weeks for 9 months! I know there will be a sigh of relief week 10 (assuming we don’t make playoffs), but I am saddened to know that the best parts of the season off the field and late night giggles for the 2012 season will end quicker then they started.
