Client Tattoos

October 18, 2012

Someone reminded me today about an interesting part of my job. I get to see people’s hidden and not so hidden tattoos. It’s very entertaining. I rarely ever comment on them, usually it’s my clients that offer up a silly little side story about them. Some times the stories are sad or it was a past life, but it helps me get to know my clients on a more personal level.

I love tattoos. I have lots and lots of them myself. I don’t judge, that’s not a part of my job, and how could I? People are so individualized and special we all have reasons for where we have come from and why.

My favorite stories are the ones where the tattoo is part of the journey. Small yet permanent reminders of the past. I have had clients tell me to ignore the tattoo or even ask for a referral to someone to touch up the 15+ year old tattoo because it’s “so embarrassing!”

I have had clients who are enjoying a new lease on life after facing addictions, abusive relationships or even jail time. They carry the past on their skin to help them push forward into the bright futures they are creating.

I’ve gotten apologies in advance for possibly offensive tattoos and I always tell those clients it’s not my job to judge them. It’s my job to heal them. I have had clients cry while telling the story of their ink, which usually makes me cry. I love the spring break mistake stories and the “oh, I had a lot of fun in college stories”. These days though, with as trendy as tattoos are, a lot of the time it’s more about wearing a piece of art as opposed to a story regarding the art.

I don’t talk lot about my tattoos. Most of them are for the appreciation of the art as opposed to the xyz moment that it represented. I don’t even ask about tattoos, it’s more interesting to hear the story come out organically.

Sometimes it’s even more about making a tattooed person comfortable. There are still a lot of people out there who wrongfully judge those who have tattoos. Sure lots of creative types get tattoos, but so do lots of people in places of power. It’s amusing, but it’s all part of the secrets I am privy too.
