Football Season is Done, but the Work Isn’t Over
Friday morning I get this panic stricken text: “Hey all. Tonight is our last game of the season and I have a small problem. I don’t have any parents to work the snack bar and I need two more people to work the chains for the game. I am asking you to forward this to our friends and see if anybody can do me a solid and help in the snack bar and or chains for our last game. It’s been a long season and frankly if you guys could help it would go along way for me fixing my booster club issues. Please let me know. Love you guys!” It was a desperate plea from CC.
It was sent to myself and 5 friends. I turned around and posted it on my Facebook, and in about 20 minutes we had 8 people to work snack bar, myself and my parents included, and chain duties for both games were filled. This staffing is usually done by boosters. They couldn’t get it done and had all week to do so. We proved that our friends and family want to help, can help and are reliable.
I spent 5 hours in the snack bar with K, who used to date one of the coaches and is a dear friend, and my parents. The varsity parents working the JV game left when the Varsity game started and the 4 of us worked together with 3 additional friends/clients of mine with no ties to our high school other then me and CC.
According to one of the 3 students working with us who got community service hours for their much needed help, it was the most money they’d seen made all season. My mother made a point of counting it herself because we have not gotten a straight answer about snack bar totals all season. We did well and had a great system going. Plus, other then being exhausted at the end of the night, we had fun damn it!
I missed all of the varsity game. We lost but played an undefeated team we couldn’t have bested anyway. This classless team and coaching staff even tried to start a fight with our team and coaches after the game because one of their own got ejected and suspended for first round of playoffs. Couldn’t they just have taken the victory and walked away? What kind of lesson does that teach? What’s the point? Cougar Coach was appalled and pissed off. He couldn’t believe the disgrace the opposing coaches were placing upon his chosen profession. He was embarrassed for them. Today he has to sit in a meeting with them that he didn’t even want to attend. (The meeting is unrelated to the game, it’s an end of season league meeting for the coaches.)
All in all, CC knows he did his best this season. He is very proud of his kids and coaching staff. Yesterday morning he hired a defensive coordinator and defensive position coach from another local team to help with the off season and of course to stay on for next year’s season. He’s ready for the future. He’s changing thing up, getting down to basics and the nitty-gritty of football. There’s potential to be had and he’s not going to miss it next year. These crazy parents and their kids didn’t get away with any of the things they did before CC came along and the same will continue for this year. He’s already having parents question the need for off season training. They told him their kids would be back in May. CC said that if they want to play next year, they will be in the weight room on Monday morning, no ifs, ands or buts.
Our next target is still the booster club, but I am going to devote that business to a whole different post because that drama is unbelievable.
This first season at KHS is done. It was memorable and worth the pain and drama. The awards banquet is in another month, but our job is never done. My next focus is a booster club membership drive, and CC is set on a goal of playoffs for next years team. It’s time to get to work. 😉
