Winter Skin Freakout!

December 20, 2012

My skin freaked out this week. I think I was headed for a breakout, but I wasn’t prepared. Sometimes when the weather shifts it changes, but I was unprepared for the breakout along my jaw line. Its been cold and wet here, but the cold has been very dry. You’d think my oily skin would be happy. Not quite. When I was in my 20’s I’d have to use a heavier moisturizer at night during the winter, this has not been the case since I entered my 30’s.

Last night I gave my self a glycolic and lactic acid peel. I had to do something. My skin obviously needed a kick in the pants. I used a custom blended professional peel and I can already see and feel a difference. This morning I used another serum with a lower percentage of glycolic acid to really help rev up my cellular turn over rate. I topped that with a oil free medical grade organic sunscreen just so I don’t have to worry about exposure.

I can feel already that part of the area where the peel was applied that the skin will peel. This is not necessarily a bad thing, my winter skin needed to be recharged and revved up!

In 10 days I will be at the ocean and my skin always breaks out when we go. I think it’s from the added moisture in the air. I am hoping to create a clean slate and that maybe breakouts won’t be an issue this year. Fingers are crossed.

On a side note I decided to give up coffee this week. I go through spells, more so in the winter then summer, where I am positively hooked on it. I had developed a habit recently of morning cups of coffee and evening chai tea lattes. It’s day 4 and I actually don’t have a headache today and I feel better. I switched to non caffeinated teas and it’s a better fit for me. I am wondering if my recent need for coffee fixes have had anything to do with my skin issue. It’s more sugar and dairy then I am used to consuming. The goal is to keep coffee away at least until we head to the coast. Seems perfectly doable.
