Dropping Anchor

May 4, 2013

CC called me on his lunch on Thursday to tell me that a very well known and respected local football coach retired this week. He then asked me if he should apply for the position. I know that in his heart that he didn’t really want to move high schools again, but this is his “dream job”. Frankly, I think where he is at has become his dream job already. He has a wonderful principal who backs up his every move, the other teachers respect him, and things are starting to come together with the team. Yes, our booster club in mind numbing and tedious to deal with, yes, the general student population is lacking in school spirit, but they still pack the stands at football games.

I know CC loves football. I know its a priority for him, but so is having a great teaching job. Which he has. His contract is confirmed for next year, he’s doing summer school and we are getting closer and closer to tenure. Which equals the biggest plus of all: JOB SECURITY. CC loves to teach. He loves being in the classroom and he loves his kids. Plus he generally loves his school. If he didn’t, I would have told him to go apply for this other job.

Part of my job as a coach’s wife is being flexible, but being a good sounding board and playing Devil’s Advocate when necessary is also part of the gig. Luckily CC trusts me, and most of the time, all he needs me to do is validate that he’s headed in the right direction. That is evident in itself. He’s come so far in the last year and it is mostly because of one simple thing, where he’s at now, is exactly where he’s supposed to be.

So we won’t be moving schools again anytime soon. (Thank God, the other school is a good one hour drive from our house!) CC will continue to breathe life into this football program and I won’t have to get a whole new wardrobe of clothes in the newest school’s colors.
