Day-cation

August 4, 2013

Not a beauty related post at all, but I took yesterday off and it was wonderful. CC and I went to Lake Tahoe for the day with some friends. We drank, we ate, we laughed, we looked at cars and enjoyed some history. There was gorgeous weather, and oh yeah, that huge lake. Here’s some of my day. It was grand!

20130804-112900.jpgThe water was deliciously cold. I was happy to have my feet in it.

20130804-112951.jpgIt was Hot August Nights in Reno and the cars trickle up to the lake for shows and cruising. This guy came from Missouri with this Cadillac that was converted into a piano in the dashboard. It has no front end and he towed it all the way over. CC said he couldn’t sing, but it was rad to see this.

20130804-113218.jpgThe CalNeva is in North Shore and sits on the statelines. It is very run down and doesn’t even have a casino at the moment. It’s been 10 years since the last time I was there and it was in much better shape. It is a part of history though as far as the lake goes. The Kennedy’s came here, Frank Sinatra owned it. The Rat Pack frequented here and it’s been speculated that Marilyn Monroe may have actually died here, not in Brentwood. Anyway, we took this hour long tour that was worth the $10 bucks and got to see the tunnels that they used to run liquor up from the lake during prohibition. We heard lots of old mob stories, and came home to google for more information. It was fascinating. Supposedly in the next three years they are going to bring this Hotel back up to its glory, and I will absolutely go back. I still want to swim (in the now drained) famous swimming pool that straddles the California and Nevada stateline.

20130804-114005.jpg The Frank Sinatra Celebrity Showroom. Judy Garland was discovered here. It seats about 300 or so people and is very intimate. I actually saw a show here about 13 years ago. They say a lot of old Hollywood greats were discovered here, and I believe that. It wasn’t a club, it was a stage Frank used to let budding stars audition for entertainment gurus, at least that’s what our tour guide said.

North Shore has always be my preference to South Lke Tahoe. It was cool when the Bonanza Park was still open and you could see where the show was filmed, ride a horse and get a taste of Hollywood history. Yesterday reminded me of how much I love that area. I used to date a guy that lived in Incline and would drive up there once a month. I miss it, and I have a feeling we’ll be back. CC teaches history and wants to go up to Truckee. There’s amazing history to jump into, and that’s his favorite thing.

It’s nice to take a day and escape for a moment. It was much needed and perfect really. We had never spent a full day with J and N like that and we had a blast. We’re itching to get away again soon, there will be more day trips in our future……. Right after football season ends.
