Game 1 Recap

September 11, 2013

I’ll just get right to it, we lost Game 1. it wasn’t a huge loss, and after Monday, we don’t consider it a loss. The kids scored 4 touchdowns, they were proud of their effort. they were not defeated and they played very well. This was not the same team we had last year, not by a long shot.

There was pressure on this game. We played a team, like us, that hadn’t won a game in two years. One of the local news stations does very thorough coverage of high school football, and we had a new van at our game the whole night. It was one of the first times that we didn’t run home to check the news or go to a bar/restaurant to watch. We saw the game, we didn’t need some talking head rehashing film telling us how it went down. CC was so disappointed, he wanted this win. He needed it. I understand that. I wanted this win too. We all did. But the kids did so well. Even better then we realized when the stats were added up that one of our kids had some of the best in the state.

CC went into his office Monday morning and had a full voicemail box. Boise State called, LSU called, USC called, Notre Dame, Oregon, Ohio, Willamette, North Carolina. They all wanted to get their hands on the same kid. Our principal and one of the academic counselors on campus spent Monday making sure this kid would be now be taking his SATs, ACTs and that he would make it thought the NAACP clearing house as a student athlete. This kid is going to college. Boise State is sending scouts on Friday to our first home game. Everyone wants to see him do it again. This is huge. This is better than a win. CC makes it his goal to get his kids to college if that’s what they want. This is what CC lives for. He himself played college football on a scholarship, he knows and understands the value. He also knows that having a signing day at our high school brings huge community recognition. Who doesn’t want that?

After the game Friday we went to a local Mel’s Diner. Our go to place the last few seasons has closed. Milk shakes were better than the beer and hard liquor we usually get! My friend J went to the game with me and her husband N came and met us afterwards. They, CC and I, along with Coach M, Coach EH, and Coach J, crammed into the largest booth they had at the restaurant and laughed for hours. Yes, we lost the first game, but the pressure was off. Now it’s on to Game 2 and the season has started. There’s excitement brewing for Friday and I can almost taste it. Despite the fact that the coaching staff is hungry for a win, there’s a different energy this year. It’s like everyone has settled into their roles. Everyone knows what they need to do. No one is worried about what everyone else is doing. They know that the bottom line depends on their own actions. Heads are going to turn this year. The next 9 weeks are going to be huge.
