Week 4 Football Update

September 28, 2013

I haven’t been doing any updates on football since the first week. It’s been difficult so far this season. My husband is exhausting himself. We have ungrateful and unsupportive parents that defeat and squash the hopes of our players.

Last night our JV squad won their game, and despite the Varsity’s best effort, they lost again. Regardless of another Varsity loss, I had a houseful of happy coaches last night. It’s been a while since I’ve been able to say that. Our Friday night family had dwindled last year due to frustrations over lost games. We used to have everyone back to our house, especially when CC coached at the high school by the house, or we could be found drinking at the closest restaurant. (We used to go to this place that was a card house with a full bar and restaurant. This bartender that worked there poured with a heavy hand and he’d let us order off the menu. Plus, when we’d come in, he’d switch the channel on the big screen tv on the wall to the local news station that runs the high school football scores. Man, he spoiled us, but we tipped him well. The place has since close during the off season, or so we thought. Turns out it simply moved a fee miles down the freeway into a local popular hotel, we’ll be going back!)

Anyway, it’s been such a struggle this season. The parents aren’t supportive and CC takes everything so personally. He and I have been talking about him applying to coach at the collegiate level. I used to be bothered by this prospect, but as long as I don’t have be in the middle of nowhere or some right-wing ultra conservative town, for the first time, I am okay with moving or trying something new. We are in the best possible place within our marriage, why not be open to something new?

Not that I think CC should run from his efforts or a failing team. I just want him to be happy. If he wants to work as hard as he does and wants that bigger payoff, why not follow the ultimate dream? He’s sharpening up his resume and will start seeing what’s out there starting around Christmas. I told him to apply everywhere, you never know what you might be offered. There is the possibility that CC will be offered the Athletic Director position at the high school he’s at now. If that happens, then we will stay where we are. It’s a really nice pay raise, and he’d still be able to coach football and manage his case load of kids (CC teaches Special Ed at the high school, I don’t know if I ever mentioned that.)

There has been so much going on and we are only finished with week 5. We have two coaches who don’t want to come back next year and CC has already lined up their replacements with two guys that used to be regular fixtures in my house. We always talk about “getting the band back together”. It’s been a running joke. We had this amazing staff our first two years at the last school, it would be nice to have everyone back at the same place again.

Homecoming is in 2 weeks and then we’ll almost be done with football this year. The holidays and our coastal vacation are really not that far away. It’s hard to believe it and every year I still don’t get anymore used to it then the last. The whole year is spend building up to these 10 weeks, and then it’s over before you can blink. I’m still hopeful for progress. I’m still praying. I still cheer and support my staff. Regardless of the parents opinion, this staff is breaking their necks for these kids. Maybe if the parents stopped bad mouthing their children and the staff, the kids could then get out of their own heads long enough to realize they have the skill set to win. Time will tell.
