I Need a Massage

January 10, 2014

One of the job hazards of being a massage therapist is that I too need to make sure that I get regular massages. How awful right? I used to be very good about it, but honestly, I haven’t had a proper massage since July, maybe even June!

This morning my hands are actually aching. I usually have no physical pain from my job. It’s very rare for me. Yes, my body does get tired, but generally, I have no issues. This morning I was have a pinching pain in my left wrist and part of my palm at the base of my thumb was really tender. Luckily I had to work this morning because all my massage tools are at my office.

There are great books on exercises for self care and self massage techniques for people who work with their hands. My favorite is a book called “Save Your Hands”. I know better then too let myself get to a point where I’m hurting. Stretching helps a lot, but it’s also good for me to do massage on my own arms to help keep myself functional for my job.

My favorite tool is something I ordered online in a whim. It’s called a golfball massager. I got it from Its this plastic “cup” that fits right into the palm of the hand and it holds a golfball. It is perfect for working into the muscles in the arms. It’s also great for legs. I can work as deep as I can stand it to get the tension and knots out of my muscles. Frankly, I use it on myself more then my own clients.

This little gizmo saved my arms this morning. After 10 minutes of working my left arm, my pain is gone and I might actually feel okay to go bowling tonight. What’s even better is that I’ll make it through my work day, and that’s even more important.
